【#4】Stitching the Future of Japanese Craftsmanship: A Dialogue with BEAMS PLUS

Learning that BEAMS celebrates its 50th anniversary this year inspires deep respect for its long history—shaping Japanese fashion and curating imported cultures to establish them across Japan. Last year, Tokyo Wednesday Club hosted its first-ever pop-up store in New York, welcoming many industry insiders. Engaging in conversations with these pioneers at the forefront of one of the world’s leading fashion capitals made the high global regard for the BEAMS brand distinctively clear.
We are starting a new journey alongside BEAMS PLUS—a long-time leader of Ivy and Preppy culture—to introduce the brilliance of Japanese craftsmanship to the global stage. For Tokyo Wednesday Club, this is a chance to pass “Ametora” (American Traditional) culture down to the next generation, as well as to share Japanese manufacturing beyond our borders. BEAMS PLUS has actively built relationships with local factories in the context of cultural preservation and regional revitalization. As creators and storytellers of culture, we will highlight the true charm of Japan to the world.
Today, approximately 90% or more of Japanese apparel products rely on overseas production. This is driven by many domestic companies accelerating mass production in relatively low-cost overseas facilities, coupled with a decline in Japanese garment factories due to an aging workforce and succession problems. While some products are best realized through foreign expertise, it is an undeniable fact that the “Made in Japan” industry is facing a sunset era.
The journey began on June 10th in Bishu—a unique region spanning both Aichi and Gifu Prefectures rather than a single city. Ahead of the BISHU FES. scheduled for November, a project guided by BEAMS’ signature aesthetic eye is now underway.
As one of the world’s top three wool-producing regions, the Bishu area accounts for more than half of Japan’s domestic wool fabric market. However, due to declining production volumes and a lack of successors, factory closures continue to rise, leaving the region facing serious challenges similar to other industries. To face this issue, a workshop was held with local high school students—who will support the future of Bishu’s craftsmanship—to create patchwork designs utilizing leftover fabrics (Zantan).
Partnering with locals to create items of genuine value is the very core of BEAMS PLUS. Japanese craftsmanship is on a steady decline. Rather than optimistically hoping for a natural recovery someday, taking action for the sake of the future—even if it is just one step at a time—is what will truly sustain the “Made in Japan” legacy moving forward.
Please stay tuned to the upcoming chapters of Japanese craftsmanship, currently being sketched out side-by-side with BEAMS PLUS.
