STYLE SAMPLE ’25

2025年1月21日

Here is our annual New Year fashion-snap issue, providing you with new ways to think about your own personal style through photos of 317 people in 17 cities around the world.

This feature is a collaboration between the POPEYE editorial team and our global contributors. We’re always working hard to find people with great fashion style, and this year’s edition is a comprehensive guide to what’s happening on the streets right now. If you browse through the photos carefully, you’ll surely find useful ideas as you think about the year. You can keep this issue close by and reread it later. You can also put it on your bookshelf as an archive and look back on it someday when you’re in search of something new.

To introduce this feature, we’ll first explain the cover, which has a slightly different design than usual. While it’s not fully bilingual, we hope that the English helps readers both in Japan and overseas get a sense of what we learned from our interviews around the world.

The Personal Style of
KING KRULE

We did an exclusive interview with London-born solo musician King Krule. King Krule met us in South Bermondsey and showed us four outfits that he styled himself. We imagined he’d be laid back, but he is quite meticulous, subtle, and a deep-thinker with a light touch. He speaks naturally when talking about the clothes his mother made him and his friends’ brands. He’s a true gentleman who cares a lot about the people around him.

The piece is also a snapshot of a specific place in South London close to the industrial areas and the stadiums.

GROUP SHOT!

Introducing seven group photos and their outfits taken during interviews with bands, their crews, their fan communities, and shop staff. Group photos are always interesting because they show you so many things at once.

In LA, we interviewed a community that enjoys outdoor events. This time, it was at a class lecturing on gardening and farming.

We also took photos in Melbourne of a running and coffee community run by the editor-in-chief of sports magazine GOOD SPORT.

We took exclusive group photos of members and crew of AAA, a collaboration project between HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster. We spoke to the key people behind the visuals and style.

WHAT’S THE STYLE LIKE THERE?

What clothes do you wear and how do you spend your days? These questions are inseparable from your actual life, and we are particularly interested in outfits created by the necessities of life and ideas that have roots in our lifestyles. This time, we visited two towns, Squamish in Canada, surrounded by mountains and with a rich river, and Brighton in the UK, a coastal town about an hour by train from London.

Squamish is a town on the west side of Canada, about an hour’s drive north of Vancouver. It’s only a short distance between the city where people live and the mountains, forests, and rivers. It’s said to be a mecca for rock climbers from all over the world, and we were able to take a close look at their authentic outdoor style. If you are interested in camping, climbing, mountain biking, and the accompanying lifestyle, this is a must-read.

Brighton is like the Kamakura of London. In recent years, many London creators have moved there or set up their production bases there. It’s also a town where people who care about sustainability and LGBTQ+ values have long lived. We filmed and interviewed young people who are devoted to being creative in a relaxed manner, and residents who prefer second-hand and organic food. It is also the home base of Japanese national soccer team member Kaoru Mitoma’s team.

Teenage City Boys: A Tale of Three Cities

London, Montreal, and Tokyo. Here is a documentary look at the daily lives of three young teenagers who are exploring “what to wear” while searching for their current styles and future paths.

Robin,
a university student
in London.
.

He’s taking a break
on the campus of UAL,
where he attends,
and he speaks in Kansai dialect.

Hibiki, a skater
who went to Montreal
by himself.
.

He reads
“sneeze magazine”
at DIME MTL.
.

Yukumo,
a high school student in Tokyo.
He’s crazy about
American classic style.

We met him
in Setagaya Park.
But today
he wore the wrong shoes.

Details!

Of course, style’s not just about the whole outfit, but also the details: What specific garments are they wearing and what are the interesting points of the design? Why do you choose and wear that outfit? We go deep to give you some solid ideas and help you make better purchases with minimal spending.

n “Teenage City Boys: A Tale of Three Cities”, Yukumo, who is crazy about sturdy American casual wear, skates in the “501XX” war-time model from Levi’s Vintage Clothing.
