ロサンゼルスのダウンタウンは他にはない場所だ。アールデコの大劇場と、家なき街、人里離れたショップやクラブが並存し、レコードは気になるとかならないとか…。名前に惑わされないで—The Last Book Storeは、希少本や絶版本の膨大なセレクションを誇る一方で、アメリカでも有数のドルビン（1枚$1のレコードが集められたセクション）の壁があるのだ。薄暗く、広大な敷地のため、初めて訪れる人は戸惑うかもしれない。

私たちは皆、ドルビンで出会えることを願う「心の欲しいものリスト」を持っている。しかし、私が長年にわたってThe Last Bookstoreに通ううちに発見したのは、スタジオミュージシャンによる忘れられたプロジェクト、プライベートプレス、見落とされた12インチ盤などだ。ロサンゼルスのLast Bookstoreで本やレコードに囲まれていると、物理的な表現の器に焦点を当てたタイムカプセルの中にいるような感覚に陥り、また、その建築と相まって、まるでフィルム・ノワールの中にいるような感覚にも陥る。私たちが使い捨ての文化に深く入り込んでいくにつれ、多くのアーティストが時間と創造力を注いできたものが、大きな予算のものであれ個人的なプロジェクトであれ、このようなドルビンの中で終わってしまうことも印象的だ。夢見る天使の街LAにふさわしく、ミュージシャンや関係者の夢を実現したレコードがここにはある。そしてある日1ドルのレコードが、あるコンテクストやセットで演奏されたり、コンプ（コンピレーションに使われること）されたりすると、あっという間に名声の階段を上ってしまうことは我々が知る通りだ。

Simply put, Downtown LA is a place like no other. The juxtaposition of grand art deco theaters with the city’s house-less population and off the beaten path shops and clubs, records may or may not be on one’s mind. Don’t let the name dissuade you – while boasting a massive selection of rare and out of print books, The Last Book Store has one of my favorite wall’s of dollar bin records stateside. Dimly lit, the sheer vastness can be daunting (much like the city itself) to a newcomer. 

We all have our “mental want-lists” that we hope to come across in dollar bins, but what I’ve discovered over the years of frequenting The Last Bookstore are often forgotten projects by studio musicians, private pressings and overlooked 12″s. Being immersed by the books, and records at LA’s Last Bookstore, one can’t help but feel though to be in a time-capsule with a focus being on physical vessels of expression – paired with the surrounding architecture, everything can start to feel as if you’re in a film noir picture. As we delve deeper and deeper into a time of throwaway-culture and disposability, it is also striking how so many artists’ outpouring of time and creativity, big budgets or personal projects alike, end up in such dollar bins. Appropriately enough, with LA being the city of dreaming angels, there are records to be found here which are realized dreams of the musicians and people involved. And as we know a dollar record one day, played in a certain context or set, or comp’d (used on a compilation) can quickly climb the ladder of fame.
