I was born in Jamaica and grew up eating jerk pork as an occasional treat.
ジャマイカ生まれの自分にジャークポークは時々やって来るごちそうでした。

There was no barber shop in the village so a traveling barber came to us every month to cut the hair of all the men and boys. The jerk pork man came on the same day. The scene of all the village men and boys sitting in a line under the big tree at the crossroad eating jerk pork and drinking beer and laughing and joking  as they waited to get hair cuts remains a fond memory for me.

床屋が無かった村には、月に1回床屋が男性や子供たちの髪を切りに、そして”ジャークポークマン”も同じ日にやって来ました。
大きな木の木陰に座って、男たちがビールを飲みジャークポークを食べながら髪を切る順番を待っていた光景は懐かしい思い出です。

Note that I write of jerk pork because jerk chicken was  then unknown to me.

ジャークポークと言っているのは、当時ジャークチキンが知られていなかったからです。

Fast forward to the present day when Jamaican jerk chicken is sold even in Big Boy family restaurants in the suburbs and  the point of this story becomes clear… I have found a restaurant in downtown Tokyo that sells the Kagawa specialty of  chicken on the bone. 

They do two types of oven cooked chicken, one is “oya” a tough old bird with incredible flavour and the other is  “hina” a tender young bird that is very juicy and spicy. 

The hina in particular has a very similar look and taste to Jamaican jerk chicken.

話しは現在に飛び、ジャマイカンジャークチキンはファミリーレストランBig Boyのメニューになるほどになりましたが、ついに東京の下町で、香川県の伝統料理である”骨付き鳥”専門店を見つけました。

２種類のオーブンで焼いた鳥は”親”＝かみごたえと素晴らしいフレーバーと、”ひな”＝スパイシーでジューシーな柔らかい若鳥。特にこの”ひな”がジャマイカンジャークチキンにかなり近いのです。

For reasons unknown to me the cook and waiter work in traditional white Japanese underwear 

理由はわかりませんがお店の二人は日本のトラディショナルなアンダーウェアで仕事をしています。

I eat at this restaurant once a month.

今は月一以上ここに通っています。

I haven’t had my hair cut since march 2020.

でも2020年の3月から髪を切ることはできていません・・・
