前回「ネアンのロンドン」を評論としてお話しましたが、自然と 、街としてのロンドンについても考えさせられました。ウィルスのため、私は1年以上に渡りロンドンから離れています。この１年間はロンドンにとって悲劇的にハードでした。多くの人が亡くなり、街は変わりました。そして今後どのような所になってしまうのか分かりません。私が知っているすべての都市にも変化が訪れることを確信しています。

私は2005年から東京に住んでいますが、少なくとも年に1回、通常であれば2、3回はロンドンに帰っていました。そのため、私はいつもロンドンのモデルを頭の中に置いています。それは不完全で特異なモデルです。なので、以前は実在する場所が定期的にアップデートされていました。現在はそのアップデートが行われていないため、頭の中にあったモデルがぼんやりとしてきました。それが故に、ロンドンの軌道から漂流している私をその状況から引き戻そうと、友人はこの本を送ってくれたのでしょう。しかし、彼とロンドンの市民は、実際の都市そのものとの関係が制限されている期間に耐えなければなりませんでした。

レトリスムインターナショナルは、物理的な場所とそれらに対する認識との間の相互作用を捉えるために、1954年頃に心理地理学という用語を作り出しました。以下の「今週の心理地理学的遊び」は、彼らのジャーナル「ポトラッチ」の創刊号に掲載されたものです。

あなたが求めるものに応じて、地方を選び、人口密度の高いまたは低い町を選び、にぎやかなまたは淋しい通りを選びなさい。家を建てなさい。その家に家具を入れなさい。家の装飾や家の周囲を最大限に活用しなさい。季節と時間を選びなさい。最も適した人々を招き、ふさわしいレコードとアルコールを揃えなさい。照明や会話は、もちろん、外の気候やあなたの思い出と同じように、その場にふさわしいものでなくてはならないでしょう。

フィジカルな街へのアクセスが制限され、皮肉なことにロンドンを離れる機会が少なくなったため、ロンドンの人達は記憶に存在する外界でますます生きなければなりません。ロックダウン状態の都市の人々は、世界的心理地理学の演習に参加していると言えるでしょう。

レトリストとその子孫にあたるシチュアシオニストの主な心理地理学的活動は、漂流（デリーブ）でした。漂流というのは、建物や空間の導くままに目的なく街を歩く行為です。現在のロンドナーの漂流は地理より心理的部分で行わなければなりません。そう考えると現在の私とロンドンの関係に似た部分があるのではないでしょうか。

ネアンの本は漂流の記録だと私は思います。ロンドンの現状況における「非物理的漂流」のための有用なツールでもあります。

他にも勧めたいものがあります：

Patrick Kieller’s “London”
「精神的な造園…漂流…自由連想法」を意味します。1994年に公開されているので、私がロンドンで一人暮らしを始めた頃に撮影されたのでしょう。なので、この映画でのロンドンは今でもある意味で「私のロンドン」と言えます。また、1994年は私が初めて東京を訪れた年でもあります。今ではロンドンに住んでいた期間よりも長く東京に住んでいますが、それでもロンドンはどういう訳か「私の街」です。きっとそれは私が自分の意思で初めて選んで住んだ街だからでしょう。愛情を込めつつも痛烈な怒りに満ちた、街の画像です。テーマは「ロンドンの問題」だと発表されています。27年もの歳月を経て街の見た目が大きく変わったにもかかわらず、少し悲しいことに「ロンドンの問題」は相変わらず続いているように思います。

“Driftwood”
友人のOliver PayneとNick Relphによる最初の映画、そしてKiellerへの返答でもある作品です。Kiellerの映画と同じフォーマット（ロングショット、固定カメラ、ナレーション）で作られていますが、自分達の目線でロンドンを語っています。つまり、４０代の元建築家及び美術大学講師の目線ではなく、20歳のスケーター、キャリアを始めようとするアーティストとしての目線です。

“Ogmios Zen School of Motoring”
車での移動は「漂流」のルールを破りますが、これらはテーマに沿うと思っています。最近作られたもので、去年のロックダウン中にも一部撮られていました。これらの安心感を与え、かつポジティブな映像は、ロックダウン中の多くの私の友人達を楽しませました。

“The Black Tower”
これは10代の頃に観たもので、最近YouTubeで再びこのビデオに出会うまで、実際に観たものなのか、夢であったものなのか分かりませんでした。建築ホラー映画のようなものです！この新聞記事でこの映画を思い出しました。築約100年のパブが保存命令を無視したディベロッパーによって取り壊されましたが、裁判所の判決により完璧なコピーを再構築するよう命じられ、来月にオープンの予定です。都市は予想に反し変化することもあります。強欲な投資家に復讐する建物について考えることは痛快でした！

これらの映画をもう一度観ながら、ニュルンベルクに住んでいる友人からのプレゼント、ブルクガイストのシュナップスを1、2ショット飲みます。直訳すると「城の亡霊」ですが、このお酒の名前は「街のスピリッツ 」(2つの意味で!)、または「都市の精神」でもいいと勝手に決めました。とにかく、このカッコいいラベルを紹介したかったのです。

では、これらすべてが「ファッション」とどのように関連しているのでしょうか。

いつかSk8thgが、ティーンエイジャーの頃にロンドンの街で人々がどのような服を着ているのかを想像してよく時間を過ごした、と話してくれました。

都市のメンタルモデルは、ファッションのアイデアを出すために必要なバックグラウンドです。
ファッションは、都市における人間的な部分の外観を変えるための一時的な方法です。建築のように周囲の環境を変える力はありませんが、永続性の欠如が魅力です。洋服を作るプロセスは、ファンタジーの街とリアルな街の重ね合わせです。

Last time I was talking about “Nairn’s London” as a piece of criticism; but, of course, it also made me think about London.
Because of the virus I’ve been away from London for over a year. London’s had a hard time of it, tragically. A lot of people have died and the city will be permanently changed. We don’t know what the city will be like after. I’m sure that all of the cities I know will change.

Although I’ve lived in Tokyo since 2005 I’ve always gone back to London at least once a year, often 2 or 3 times. So, I always keep some kind of model of London in the background of my mind. Of course, it’s an incomplete and idiosyncratic model. But it used to have regular updates from the real place. As the updates aren’t happening now the mental model appears less vivid. Perhaps that’s what prompted my friend to send me the book – the idea that I was drifting out of the orbit of London, and an attempt to drag me back. But, also he and all current London residents have had to endure a period of reduced interaction with the real city themselves.

The Letterist International coined the term Psychogeography around 1954 to capture the interaction between physical places and our perceptions of them. This ‘Psychogeographical Game of the Week’ appeared in the first issue of their journal, Potlatch:

Depending on what you are after, choose an area, a more or less populous city, a more or less lively street. Build a house. Furnish it. Make the most of its decoration and surroundings. Choose the season and the time. Gather together the right people, the best records and drinks. Lighting and conversation must, of course, be appropriate, along with the weather and your memories. If your calculations are correct, you should find the outcome satisfying. (Please inform the editors of the results.)

With restricted physical access to the city and, ironically, fewer opportunities to leave, London’s population must live more and more in their memories of outside. Populations of locked-down cities have been participating in a world-wide psychogeographical exercise.

The chief psychogeographical activity of the Letterists and their descendants, the Situationists, was the derive: an otherwise aimless drift or walk through the city guided only by the participants’ feeling toward the buildings and spaces they encountered. The Londoner’s derives must now be conducted much more in the psyche than in geography… Not too dissimilar to my relationship with that city, then.

Nairn’s book is a document of a derive, I think. At present it is also a useful aid for the ‘non-physical derive’ in London. But there are others:

Patrick Kieller’s “London”
– actually refers to “psychic landscaping… drifting… free association”. It was released in 1994, so it was being made in the years when I first lived on my own in London. Which makes it ‘my London’ in a way that’s still real to me. 1994 was also when I first visited Tokyo. I have lived in Tokyo longer now than I ever lived in London and yet London is still ‘my city’ for some reason – connected to this time when I first moved there, I think.

It’s a loving but angry and scathing picture of the city… It says its topic is “The problem of London”. It’s a bit sad to say that despite huge changes to the way the city looks in the 27 years that have passed, much of the “problem” seems to remain.

“Driftwood” is my friends Oliver Payne and Nick Relph’s first film and their answer to Kieller – using the same format (long shots, stationary camera, narration) to talk about London from their perspective. That is: the perspective of 20 year old skaters, artists starting their careers and not of 40 something former architect and fine art lecturer.

Car travel is breaking the rules, really, but I think these fit the theme. They are also the most current and partially take place during London’s lockdown. The outlook of these films is, finally, reassuringly positive. A lot of my friends were enjoying these during lockdown.

“The Black Tower”
I saw this when I was a teenager and until I found it again recently on YouTube I wasn’t sure if my memory of it was real or a dream. It’s sort of an architectural horror film! I was reminded about this film by this newspaper story about a 100 year old pub that was demolished by developers who ignored a preservation order. The court ordered them to rebuild an exact copy. It’s supposed to open next month. The city can change in unexpected ways. I felt strangely hopeful to think about a building somehow getting revenge on cynical investors!

Whist re-watching these films, I will drink a shot or two of Burggeist schnapps that a friend who is living in Nuremberg brought me as a gift. Literally “the ghost of the castle” its name could, I think, be liberally interpreted as the spirit (2 meanings!) or, even, the psyche of the city… I’ve decided it’s appropriate, anyway, and I wanted to share the great label.

So, how does all of this connect to ‘fashion’?

The mental model of a city is a necessary background for fashion ideas.

Fashion is a fleeting way of changing the look of the human part of a city. It doesn’t have architecture’s power to alter the surrounding space, but its lack of permanence is its charm. The process of making it is in a super-imposition of a fantasy city and a real one
